Paul Craig, portfolio manager of the Cirilium Active Portfolios has been recognised in this year’s Alpha Manager ratings by FE fundinfo. This is one of the investment industry’s most sought-after plaudits and means that Paul is now ranked in the top 10% of all fund managers based on the alpha generation (or outperformance) he’s consistently delivered over the course of his career.
This month FE fundinfo announced its list of Alpha Managers based on data to the end of 2020. Included this year was Quilter Investors portfolio manager Paul Craig, thanks to the strength of the alpha generation he’s consistently demonstrated in the Cirilium Active Portfolios.
Paul has managed the original three Cirilium Active Portfolios – Balanced, Moderate and Dynamic – since March 2009, shortly after they launched in June 2008. Paul also manages the Cirilium Conservative and Adventurous portfolios which were launched in 2012 and 2017, respectively, as the range was expanded to better meet the needs of a growing investor base.
Paul has more than 25 years’ experience in the asset management industry. Today he is one of the UK’s most influential fund selectors having provided seed capital to numerous new fund launches, many of which have subsequently become star performers in their respective sectors.
FE fundinfo has tracked Paul’s performance record as a portfolio manager since November 2003. Between then and the end of 2020, the group reports that Paul outperformed his peer group composite by some 92%*.
First among equals: Alpha Managers
The Alpha Manager rating is a very well-established industry benchmark now in its ninth year. It’s based on quantitative analysis of a fund manager’s alpha generation versus their fund benchmarks over the course of their career.
As a result, there remains no way to influence FE fundinfo in the awarding of its Alpha Manager rating as the only thing that counts is genuine consistence of outperformance.
Consequently, it’s an accolade that is only extended to the top 10% of the 2,500 UK fund managers who are analysed each year as part of the FE Alpha Manager programme.
Paul’s recognition as one of the investment industry’s most consistent outperformers is based on the outstanding risk-adjusted returns he’s delivered for clients across the risk spectrum.
According to FE fundinfo, over the decade to the end of 2020, Paul outperformed his composite peer group in seven out of 10 years. Relative outperformance of his peers was especially strong over one, three and five years with Paul outperforming by 6.1%, 5.3% and 16.6% respectively, over these time frames.
